Desco’s Shaun Shines as Star Student

Desco engineer Shaun Richardson is celebrating after being named Best Overall Student 2017 by the North-East branch of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

Shaun has been studying towards a Foundation Degree in Building Services Engineering at Gateshead College, on a day release basis, alongside his role in Desco’s electrical engineering support team in Sunderland. The CIBSE-accredited course, is delivered by the college in partnership with, and validated by, Northumbria University. Shaun was chosen from his class to receive the special prize in recognition of his commitment and performance throughout the academic year.

The CIBSE North East student awards are presented annually, rewarding the best of the master’s, bachelor’s and foundation degree students at Gateshead and Northumbria with bursaries and prizes.

Shaun was presented with his award by CIBSE North East Regional Chairman Philip Oliver and Northumbria University senior lecturer Dr Bobo Ng on 26th September at the Sandman Hotel in Newcastle.

Shaun commented, “it is a privilege to be selected for this award – and particularly to be recognised by a respected professional institute like CIBSE. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the course; I’ve learned a lot of theory which I have been able to apply in my practical work at Desco and I’m looking forward to developing my knowledge further as I progress with my studies”

Desco supported qualified electrician Shaun’s move from the trade, into engineering design, when he joined the team as a junior engineer in 2016 and enrolled at Gateshead College.

With the foundation degree now under his belt, Shaun has gained entry to Northumbria University's Building Services Engineering bachelor’s degree course. He started the course this month, and sponsored by Desco, he will continue his studies on a part-time basis, alongside his work at the practice’s North-East office.
