Desco Sponsorship Gives Kids a Sporting Chance

Desco is delighted to be giving its backing to an award-winning social enterprise which promotes health and wellbeing for youngsters through sport.

North East Sport is a not for profit organisation. It currently delivers healthy activities, PE and sports to over 4000 children a week, working in schools and communities.

Amongst its projects, the organisation runs a football club - North East Sport Youth FC, which has over 450 members, and with a total of 30 football teams, is one of the largest clubs in the North East of England. The organisation also works in partnership with local authorities to deliver environmental clean-up, painting and planting projects, and initiatives such as the Beach Camp, which welcomes children during school holidays, to take part in beach-based activities like shelter building, rock pooling, treasure hunts, sport and games.

Explaining the ethos of the organisation, and the inspiration behind it, North East Sports’ founder Peter Curtis, said, “I wanted to make a difference. I set up North East Sport to give young people something to do with their lives; I did it to inspire young people to take up sport, to lead healthier lives. I did it to build stronger communities.”

Commenting on the company’s sponsorship, Desco’s Marketing Manager, Sarah Hall, said, “Being a business that was established in the North East, Desco has a genuine interest in the future success of the region. We are committed to supporting community-based initiatives in sports, education and enterprise whenever we can. We are delighted to be able to continue this commitment by sponsoring North East Sport. We wish them well with all of the valuable projects they deliver for the benefit of our region’s youngsters.”

As well as sponsorship from local businesses like Desco, the organisation has used funding from various organisations such as the Big Lottery Fund, The Football Foundation and the Coalfields Regeneration Trust to help deliver health and wellbeing projects across the North East of England.
