Desco Welcomes Aidan Ward, its first PlanBEE Apprentice

Built environment student Aidan Ward has joined the Desco team for his first industry placement under the unique PlanBEE higher apprenticeship programme.

Aidan’s four-month placement with Desco is his first experience of working in an engineering design office, delivering live project work.

The PlanBEE programme Aidan is following, is delivered by Gateshead College, in partnership with a consortium of built environment organisations, including Desco. Its students are given access to work placements with several companies throughout their course of practical training and theoretical study. The aim is to present a more comprehensive insight into the built environment industry than what is offered by traditional, single-discipline courses.

Desco Technical Director, Paul Baker, manages the company’s partnership with PlanBEE. He says, “Designing for the built environment is a collaborative process involving multiple architectural and engineering disciplines. It makes so much sense to train future practitioners in a joined-up way. Giving students the chance to experience several specialisms during their training, will empower them with the rounded knowledge that will benefit project delivery, throughout their careers.”

Paul will be supporting Aidan during his placement at Desco, along with nominated mentors. The team will help Aidan to gain an insight into the basics of mechanical and electrical building services engineering and the fundamental aspects which shape a building’s energy strategy, infrastructure and internal environmental conditions.

Using design coordination tools and calculation software packages, such as REVIT and IES, and attending design team meetings, is helping Aidan to appreciate the mechanical and electrical designers’ roles within the broader design and construction team. Aidan explains, “In the few weeks I’ve spent with Desco, I’ve already learnt a lot. I can already see how important collaboration is, and how a good knowledge of all the relevant disciplines can contribute to the success of a project.”

Aidan’s four-month PlanBEE placement officially commences in September; he also has taken the opportunity to gain some additional work experience with the company, over the summer period. He added, “the team at Desco has made me feel very welcome. I’m looking forward to learning more from my mentors throughout the rest of my placement.”

As a first-year student, Aidan is working towards achieving an HNC qualification. Following that, he will get the opportunity to continue, to gain an HND, and afterwards, a bachelor’s degree.
