Multiple Award Winning - The Word: National Centre for the Written Word

The word ‘Winner’ springs to mind when it comes to The Word – National Centre for the Written Word.

Located in South Shields, North East England this iconic, circular shaped-building is a truly outstanding development that is gaining recognition at both regional and national awards including the RIBA 2017 National Award for Architecture.

We were delighted to provide mechanical & electrical services design on this architect-led development alongside FaulknerBrowns Architects, Curtins Consulting (structural engineers), Rex Procter & Partners (quantity surveyor / cost consultant), Muse Developments (project management) and APEX Acoustics (acoustics engineers).

This building redefines peoples understanding of ‘the library’ where exploration, interaction and socialisation are positively encouraged. The pure form of the building is courageous and a statement of its intent, moreover it successfully sits well in the overall site masterplan to create a public realm space and encourage people into and through the building.

The development, as well as the town library, houses a new hub for creative writing with interactive exhibition space, digital media space with a range of facilities like a computer gaming area, a FabLab with 3D printers and vinyl and laser cutters, digitised archives, meeting rooms, children’s storytelling area, OpenZone IT suite, café and a rooftop restaurant providing stunning views over the river.

Desco Board Director Neil Crowe said “To say we were delighted to be part of this award winning project is an understatement! We were pleased to be part of a great team that has produced such an iconic and striking building that has and will continue to gain recognition at the highest level.”
