Desco delivered the M&E and pool water design and consultancy services on this project to refurbish and modernise the existing Abbey Stadium Sports Centre, to provide a new 25m, six lane pool with tiered seating for 300 spectators, as well as a smaller training pool and high specification changing village.

The project for Redditch Borough Council also included a new entrance and reception area, modern dry side changing facilities and a new state-of-the-art gym and dance studio.

The existing sports facility remained fully operational throughout the design and construction of the project, with minimal disruption to the centre users, and was successfully completed and handed over in 2013.

We always encourage lateral-thinking in our design solutions so as well as the ‘usual’ renewable technologies, we have implemented some exciting, innovative ideas on recent schemes, which have resulted in lower energy usage and exceeding of building energy targets.

The leisure centre is located next to an existing council-run crematorium; we worked closely with the local council to understand the functioning of the cremation equipment and used this knowledge to design a scheme to recover heat rejected from the crematorium – which would usually be rejected to the atmosphere - and redirect this energy to be used beneficially within the leisure centre.

The project has been quoted by Sport England as an exemplar case study scheme and also won a prestigious Green Apple Award in recognition of its environmental best practice.

The introduction of the innovative heat recovery system alone is now reducing the Abbey Stadium’s gas bill by over 40%; it will also reduce the council’s entire carbon footprint by 4% per year.
