Desco delivered the MEP services design and consultancy services for this new state-of-the-art sport and leisure facility for the community of Matlock in Derbyshire. Known in its development stages as the Central Area Leisure Centre (CALC) the project - “the biggest single development” Derbyshire Dales District Council had undertaken, includes an eight-lane main pool with moveable floor that meets regional competition standards, a learner pool, wet play area, large, full-height sports hall to accommodate regional standard badminton courts, indoor hockey, basketball, volleyball, five a side football, cricket practice and netball, wet and dry changing areas, main reception area, a café, meeting room, spectator seating, a 50-station fitness suite, a community facility and a second sports hall, known as the ‘Studio’, to accommodate gymnastics, martial arts, aerobics, dance classes and private functions.

The development also included a community centre provision to replace the old Darley Dale Community Centre.

A key requirement of the project was to design a facility which met the visions and expectations of the local community as well as tourists. The client aspiration for the development was to escape from public perception of traditional local authority leisure centres and deliver a development which would be an exciting leisure and tourism attraction – appealing to the area’s large tourist contingent (it is situated in the Peak District).

The project was officially opened in autumn 2011 by Lord Coe and has already achieved nominations in three categories at the 2012 RICS East Midlands Awards for Community Benefit, Regeneration and Design & Innovation and also won the accolade for the ‘Most Sustainable Project’ at the Brownfield Briefing Remediation Innovation Awards.
