Run by national charity The Children’s Trust, Archie Norman House is the UK’s largest facility for the rehabilitation of children with acquired brain injuries (ABI). We were appointed to design the new two-storey facility, to replace an ageing ward building, to accommodate a wide range of facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, multi-sensory bathrooms, a family apartment and 22 extra beds.

The new facility provides specialised care for highly dependent children with ABI including new residential provision and a hydrotherapy centre, comprising:

  • Bedrooms for up to 20 children
  • Multi-sensory bathrooms
  • Ceiling tracking and hoisting equipment
  • An under-floor guided wheelchair mobility system
  • ‘Possum’ system which allows children with even the slightest movement to control their environment
  • Piped oxygen and a nurse call system throughout
  • Facilities for families including a flat where parents can stay with their child
  • Indoor and outdoor play areas
  • A multi-sensory room
  • Two separate dining areas, lounges and quiet rooms
  • Facilities for training external care teams
