Desco delivered the MEP engineering design on this multi award-winning scheme for Gateshead College of Further Education. The new purpose built 14500m2 campus on the Baltic Business Park on Gateshead Quayside can accommodate 12000 students and opened in January 2008.

The new state-of-the-art facilities include general and specialist teaching and learning spaces, learning resource centre, ICT centres, art & design, specialist catering kitchens, fully-equipped hair and beauty areas - which replicate those found in some of the nation’s top salons, science labs, engineering department and various professional-standard facilities for vocational courses including music, theatre and performing arts subjects including recording studios and a performance theatre.

The campus was built on a challenging plot of sloping land of an irregular shape. The design team embraced these site features into a vibrant, eye-catching design solution which picked up awards and commendations at the LABC Built in Quality and Constructing Excellence awards.

The challenging site was further compromised by its proximity to trunk roads and regional railway links – meaning the potential of excess noise in the teaching areas and the client’s inclination for a building design with no opening windows. Although this necessitated a predominantly mechanically ventilated building, we were able to provide a design solution which maximised the use of ventilation heat recovery and variable air volume technologies in order to minimise energy consumption. The development achieved a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating.
