projectMetroCentre Transport Interchange

locationGateshead, UK

As part of the major redevelopment of the MetroCentre shopping and leisure complex in Gateshead, comprising the redevelopment and extension of the centre to provide an additional 35,000m² of retail space and a new 1100 space multi-storey car park, we completed the M&E design for a new state-of-the-art public transport interchange.

The new bright and airy interchange development, which links directly into the MetroCentre shopping area, replaces the old bus station and provides visitors with an improved, comfortable waiting environment, features electronic display boards and creates a welcoming arrival point for visitors travelling to the centre by rail or on one of the 100 buses that travel through the interchange from throughout the North East region.

The scheme involved some major adaptations to the site infrastructure and sensitive interfaces with the existing centre, which has a footfall of 24 million visitors per annum, and the centre remained fully operational and trading throughout the construction period.
