We received a full duties appointment to refurbish this naturally ventilated 20,000m2 award winning head office building and support facilities for the National Farmers Union Mutual (NFUM) in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The project also included the conversion of an old on-site stationery store into a new staff restaurant and private dining facility.

Emphasis in the project objectives was placed on a requirement for a sustainable low energy building whilst maintaining excellent internal comfort conditions. The existing building’s natural ventilation performance was previously operating ineffectively and therefore attention to this element of the project was of great importance.

Desco provided enhanced dynamic thermal modelling services to assess natural ventilation solutions with respect to temperature and air quality control.

The refurbishment and replacement of the building services installations included the fire and security systems, CCTV, office lighting and escape lighting, introduction of a comprehensive daylight monitoring and occupancy sensing lighting control system, upgrade of lifts and introduction of an automated window control system to monitor and manage the building’s natural ventilation and cooling performance.

The refurbishment was carried out in a number of phases over a two year period while the building remained occupied.

On completion, the refurbished headquarters building was opened by HRH the Princess Royal and was also the topic of a feature article in the CIBSE Building Services Journal with emphasis on its 'green' credentials.
