locationBaltic Business Quarter, Gateshead, UK

The Northern Design Centre is the new eye-catching building on the Newcastle Gateshead landscape. The concept of the development is as a regional design hub that promotes the importance and understanding of good design - combined with a sense of innovation and fun.

Desco was appointed to deliver the design of the MEP services for this new ‘hub’ - a place where designers can develop world class concepts, collaborations and initiatives that will raise the profile of and foster further success in North East England.

The lower floors of the west wing of the of the 4,200m2, four-storey building are devoted to Design Network North which is led by RTC North, a technology transfer and commercialisation consultancy, in partnership with the Universities of Newcastle, Teesside and Northumbria.

The east wing and upper floors of the development provide incubator units, ‘move-on’ units and general flexible spaces for new and developing businesses involved in the region’s design and technology industries. The scheme includes meeting and conferencing facilities, design studios, dark rooms and ‘The Hub’ lounge - a unique space filled with games consoles, TVs and sofas – a place to relax and reinvigorate creative ideas.
