Desco delivered the MEP services design for the major refurbishment of Northumbria University’s Ellison Building in order to provide new accommodation for the School of Applied Sciences.

The project, on the university’s City Campus, included the major refurbishment of three floors within the existing building, carried out on a phased basis to provide teaching, research and development areas for applied sciences.

New facilities provided included laboratories for:

  • Histology/staining
  • Biology
  • Synthetic organic chemistry
  • Food technology
  • Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS)
  • Instrumentation
  • Food and environmental chemistry
  • Tissue culture

The new facilities incorporated specialist laboratory equipment including:

  • A downdraft dissection table
  • Steam generator with blow down separator
  • Fume cupboards with processed gases
  • Reverse osmosis units
  • ICP machines
  • GC-MS machines

As part of the works, process gases such as nitrogen, hydrogen, acetylene, natural gas were provided to the laboratories from a dedicated bottle store outside of the building to remove the risk of storing bottled gases within the labs. Gas detection systems which warn against oxygen depletion within the laboratories were also incorporated.
