Desco enjoys an excellent ongoing working relationship with Newcastle College Group having assisted them on a number of estate improvements, redevelopments and new build schemes over recent years. Most recently we have delivered M&E design services associated with the redevelopment of the existing Parsons Building on the group’s Rye Hill Campus in Newcastle-upon-Tyne city centre.

The project has comprised the full strip out, redevelopment and external ‘face-lift’ of the 11 storey building to provide a rejuvenated facility with the look, feel and functionality of a new building.

The completed development provides state-of-the-art real life working and classroom environments for the Health and Enterprise department which has relocated from the existing Trevelyan Building into the redeveloped building. The scheme also has a remodelled façade and two storey glazed entrance.

The design for the redeveloped Parsons building on the city centre campus, required careful coordination and sensitive interfacing with the existing site infrastructure to minimise disruption to existing live buildings. In particular the college library and the Armstrong Building are physically connected to the Parsons Building at ground and first floor level and so careful attention was required to avoid design solutions that would have any detrimental impact upon the integrity of the services linkages between the buildings. Furthermore, following investigation it was agreed that relocation of the plant room area was unviable and therefore we had to work within the constraints of the existing plant area provision at ground floor, level 10 and roof levels.

The building was completed in autumn 2015 and has already received numerous accolades and plaudits including a highly commended award from Constructing Excellence in the North East in the Building of the Year category and a commendation at the Lord Mayor of Newcastle’s Design Awards.
