Priority Schools Building Programme

Desco have delivered the M&E design services for a range of new and redeveloped education facilities as part of the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme (PSBP). The programme was to rebuild or refurbish around 260 schools within England in the worst condition with a £2.4 billion initiative. 31 of the schools chosen for the programme were within the North East.

The recently completed PSBP North East 2 – a batch of 12 schools, has been delivered as part of a team led by the main contractor and comprises of six secondary schools and six primary schools, with a combined value of £120m. The schools minister Lord Nash said: “Our investment in school buildings across the country is transforming the learning environment for tens of thousands of pupils and their teachers.”

The schools involved in the PSBP included:

Bedlingtonshire Community High School in Northumberland – Provided with funding to develop a new high school building to home 800 pupils.

Front Street Primary School in Gateshead – Provided with a new two storey building which is home to 489 students and staff.

Hetton School in Sunderland – Provided with funding to develop a new two storey school which now has capacity for up to 900 pupils.

Hylton Castle Primary School in Sunderland – Provided funding to develop a new two storey building for staff and students.

Laurence Jackson School in North Yorkshire – Provided with funding to allow a new state-of-the-art building to be developed.

Lingey House Primary School in Gateshead – Provided with funding to allow a new two form entry school which now accommodates 420 places instead of the 294 that the old building could accommodate.

Longbenton Community College in Newcastle upon Tyne – Provided funding to develop a new two storey building.

Mandale Mill Primary School in Stockton on Tees – Provided funding to develop and adapt five subsequent school sites.

Roman Road Primary School in Gateshead – Three additional blocks were built with the help of funding, which has created 18 new classrooms, a new library, new office space and a modern sports hall for the pupils and staff.

Seaham School of Technology in Sunderland – The new Seaham School of Technology was granted funding which replaced the former 50-year-old school. There are now an extra 345 pupil places in the E shaped design building.

Shiney Row Primary School in Sunderland – Provided funding to transform the former school into a new two storey building.

The Duchess’s Community High School in Northumberland – A new two storey structure, which accommodates over 1,000 pupils from Alnwick, Northumberland and surrounding areas.
