locationDurham, UK

Desco was appointed to design the M&E services for this award-winning new doctor’s surgery, to replace the existing facility. Built on a brown field site in the centre of a former mining village, the three storey premises are on a split level site enabling the building to be managed as a whole but also be divided into discreet suites to support the requirements of the doctors surgery, dental surgery, speech and language therapy suite, pharmacy and the Primary Care Trust facilities.

The client had clear aspirations for a low energy, environmentally friendly building and our M&E design proposals have ensured the scheme is highly energy efficient.

Over 80% of the energy required for the surgery is generated by a combination of integrated geothermal and road energy systems and therefore the building has no conventional gas supply. Other low carbon features include a sedum roof, solar panels, natural ventilation and sun pipes coupled with active artificial lighting control to deliver the ‘green’ brief of the client.

The scheme was awarded the 2008 Journal Landmark Award in the Environmental category and both the regional and the national RICS Awards 2009 for Community Benefit.
