Desco was appointed to deliver the detailed M&E services design for ‘Sport Central’ - a new build state-of-the-art sports and training facility at Northumbria University’s City Campus.

The aim of the project was to deliver Olympic standard facilities, for the use of the students, staff, city residents and the business community with the aim of creating ‘a hub for mass participation and social inclusion’.

The development, on a prime city centre location. comprises state-of-the-art fitness and training facilities including a 25m pool, multi-function sports hall, training hall, fitness gym, sports science facility, climbing wall and indoor sprint track and jump pit.

The development, on a prime city centre location which has a considerable amount of through traffic and a high footfall, required careful planning and sensitive interfacing works.

Sports facilities with pools have traditionally been high energy usage buildings, however we implemented a number of sustainable design features to assist towards achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.

The project utilises a combined heat and power (CHP) plant designed to meet the full heating base load while providing electricity to the sports centre and the adjacent student union building. The building also benefits from a rain water recovery system providing grey water to the sanitary appliances via a 125,000litre underground storage tank as well as automatic shut off devices to all sanitary appliances

The project has collected various accolades including the RICS North East Renaissance Award Project of the Year 2011 as well as winning the Award for Community Benefit and a commendation in the Award for Sustainability at the same awards ceremony.
