Green Light for Morpeth’s New Leisure Centre
A new state-of-the-art leisure development has been given planning approval on Northumberland County Councils first ever virtual planning committee meeting on 2nd June 2020. Desco are delighted to be a part of the architecturally lead team by GT3, providing the mechanical and electrical services design.
The new £21m development is to be built in the heart of Morpeth Town Centre and will be run by Active Northumberland, the charitable trust that manages leisure services across the county.
The scheme will create a new leisure centre with sports and leisure facilities and a community services hub including a library, customer services and adult learning. The new complex will bring all facilities into one venue and will create an exciting new venue for a wide range of people. The facilities include a main swimming pool with 6 lanes and associated viewing gallery, a teaching swimming pool, sports hall including 4 badminton courts, sprung flooring, and associated viewing, a gym accommodating a minimum of 100 stations, two fitness studios, a spinning studio, assessment/consultation room, changing areas and a spa. There will also be a reception area, café/refreshment area, soft play, management facilities and changing places.
Works could begin on site as early as this Autumn with construction anticipated to be complete by Spring 2022.
