Project Fresco
Desco were appointed to undertake the mechanical and electrical services, as well as advising an on-site wide energy strategy on the new paint manufacturing plant in the North East of England.
Project Fresco is a new £25m, 20,000m² production facility that manufactures and packages a range of solvent and water borne paints and incorporates the latest technology in paint manufacturing, container-filling and packing.
The client had an aspiration to achieve 10% of the on-site energy generated by renewable sources, which included the predicted process energy on site. They also had a requirement for the project to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating.
Desco undertook a series of studies to look at how the energy strategy and the BREEAM rating could best be achieved. This included several presentations to the client to explain the proposals. We also used extensive IES thermal modelling techniques to analyse the energy targets and associated carbon reductions. This enabled us to predict which low carbon technologies would bring most benefit to the project.
Renewable technologies incorporated into the project include:
• Biomass heating boilers
• Air Source Heat Pumps
• Rainwater recovery
• A solar thermal water heating system
• 1,200m2 roof mounted photovoltaic panels
We appraised and prepared feasibility reports on various other technologies, which were discounted on the basis of technical or financial viability reasons. We considered planning constraints, aesthetics, capital cost, life cycle cost and potential payback, end user requirements, maintenance and product life-span.
A fully integrated building management system was provided within the development, which controls and monitors the heating, ventilation and domestic hot water systems and interfaces with the gas meters, water meters, comfort cooling, compressed air, rainwater recovery, sprinklers, gas suppression system, high and low voltage switchgear, UPS, lighting, external lighting, CCTV, access control, fire alarms, intruder alarms and leak detection system.
The project was a success and both the energy target and the BREEAM rating were achieved.
