Eldon Square
Desco has delivered the MEP design for all four phases of this £200m regeneration project to provide some 468,000ft2 of new retail space, as well as a full refurbishment of the existing malls.
The projects have entailed the historic Eldon Square to be regenerated by new landscaping and the provision of restaurant/retail units on the north and west sides. Double height restaurants at the entrance to a new scheme mall overlook the square, while the façade of the existing centre has been remodelled to provide glazed elevations and terracing. New family restaurants now open on to the west of the square, bringing life and vitality to the area, while respecting the memorial element of the square.
A new secure and comfortable bus station, with a modern, glass-fronted waiting area, has been created at the north side of the scheme — providing direct access for buses to the shopping centre.
The existing shopping centre between Clayton Street and Newgate Street has been rebuilt to provide a new department store and two-level modern shops along a wider mall. There are also new shops at street level. The subsequent phase of Eldon Square’s redevelopment comprised the full refurbishment of the remaining malls and the creation of an enhanced entrance off Northumberland Street, which was complete in 2015.
The most recent scheme we delivered for the centre was a new food and beverage area known as The Grey’s Quarter. The project officially opened in late 2016, with the individual restaurant units opening for business between the New Year and spring. The new stylish and vibrant development has provided 20 new restaurants, including and a rooftop terrace overlooking the city.
The schemes have all involved working around and within an existing ‘live’ city centre shopping area, which have remained fully operational throughout the construction programme.
