Morpeth Sport and Leisure Centre
The new Active Northumberland Morpeth Sport and Leisure Centre opened in 2023 and brings a range of services under one roof.
The new Morpeth Sport and Leisure Centre offers a range of facilities to the community with its leisure facilities and community services hub.
Desco delivered the M&E design services for the new centre which provides a mixed-use space for the community. As well as a six-lane swimming pool, a studio pool with an adjustable floor has been fitted, which allows the pool to be used for a variety of activities including swimming lessons and aqua fit.
There is also a sports hall, which includes four badminton courts and sprung flooring, a state-of-the-art gym and three fitness studios, one dedicated to cycle fitness with Technogym bikes, and the other two for fitness classes, an assessment/consultation room, changing areas and a spa.
The spa offers a relaxing space for customers, offering a sauna, steam room, salt room, experience showers and spa pool.
The centre also features a library, council customer services and a base for Northumberland Skills’ learning centre which will support school leavers and adults, offering STEM learning and catering. There is also a café and soft play, bringing services for everyone in the town of Morpeth under one roof.
Several eco-friendly features, including solar panels, have been fitted to keep running costs low and make the building more sustainable. The eco-friendly features will help to reduce the carbon emissions of the centre by around 70% compared to the previous facility.
The £21 million development was funded by Northumberland County Council as part of their ambitious plans to upgrade and transform sport and leisure facilities across the county and to enhance the customer experience. The new building was built on The Terrace site on Gas House Lane in Morpeth’s town centre.
