Cozenton Park Sports Centre opens
The £23m Sports Centre replaces the former Splashes Leisure Centre in Medway
The new Cozenton Park Sports Centre has officially opened as a replacement for the former Splashes Leisure Centre in Medway.
Desco designed the M&E services for the new sport and leisure centre which was designed by Space and Place.
Previously known as Splashes, the new £23m two-storey centre was built on the site of the former leisure centre and replaced the previous centre. The original plans included a refurbishment of the original building, but surveys indicated significant structural issues, which led to refurbishment plans to be abandoned and the original Splashes centre being demolished.
Cozenton Park Sports Centre has two swimming pools, a children’s pool which includes a flume, wave ball pool, beach area, a 25m training pool, a gym, multi-purpose dance and fitness studio and a café.
The building was designed with Medway Council’s sustainability ambitions in mind and therefore was designed with low energy at its heart, taking design principles from Passivhaus to reduce energy consumption as much as practicable.
Several sustainable features were included in the design including photovoltaics, CO2 ASHP’s to provide high efficiency hot water, separate ASHP’s for space heating and a water source VRF waste heat recovery system to recoup waste heat from the gym to heat the pool water for free.
The team included Space and Place, Furness Partnership, Stace and Willmott Dixon Construction.
