New Springmoor Grange School opens its doors

The newly built Springmoor Grange school in Spennymoor has opened and welcomed pupils into its primary school and nursery.

The new Springmoor Grange School opened its doors to pupils at the start of the new term in September 2024.

Desco were appointed through Durham County Councils M&E Framework to deliver the mechanical and electrical services design for the new build primary and nursery school in Spennymoor.

The new school replaced the two former Ox Close nursery and Primary School buildings and provides nursery provision for 2 to 4 year olds and a primary school for 4 to 11 year olds in one building. The £13m new-build school has a capacity for 630 primary school pupils, and 52 nursery spaces, designed to provide more places then currently required to keep up with the pace of Spennymoor’s growing community.

The school includes 21 classrooms designed to accommodate up to 30 pupils in a flexible space, allowing for teaching in a range of styles and activities including presentation work, discussion and research. Also included in the new building is a learning community suite, library, office spaces, staff room, toilet facilities, changing rooms, hall, and dining and kitchen facilities.

The school found it important to promote inclusion and support the needs of pupils with mobility and sensory requirements, and therefore required designs in line with the DDA to cater for those pupils. The school also wanted teaching spaces to be futureproofed as technology and teaching equipment advances.

PV panels have been installed on the school’s roof to allow the school to generate its own solar energy and was designed with a focus of achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.

The new school opened in September 2024 at the start of the new term.
