Park View Student Village
Park View Student Village is a £75 million redevelopment and creation of a new student accommodation for Newcastle University. It replaces the previous limited student accommodation and offers a new 1,300 modern en-suite bedroomed development.
The new development consists of a total of 8 buildings, 6 towers of student accommodation an energy centre and external substation. The site is located on Richardson road next to Royal Victoria Infirmary hospital in Newcastle.
The six towers of student accommodation have been largely created through volumetric modular construction, built offsite in a controlled factory environment then transported to be assembled and arranged to form the fully furnished student living accommodation. This method improved the final outcome of quality and reduced installation/construction programme time – enabling the August 2018 handover date to be met and allowed students to move in before start of the new academic term.
Each tower consists of a cross layout, with a central core and four wings of modular en-suite bedrooms complete with a shared kitchen and lounge. The M&E services within each module are routed back to a series of riser positions to allow for connection to the main building services distribution systems.
As MEP consultants working with Galliford Try, our role was to provide mechanical and electrical designs for the modular construction along with the entire site wide services. These involved high voltage diversions, gas, water, electrical connections, and general building services, such as, lighting, fire alarms, heating and ventilation.
BIM was also a client requirement on this project. CIMC were able to produce 3D models of each module type, which helped feed into the M&E design model along with the architect and structural models and enabled the developed design to be fully co-ordinated.
