The Regent, Redcar

Desco were appointed to design the M&E services on the new Regent Cinema in Redcar. The unique art deco style building stands on Redcar seafront and replaced the previous 1920’s structure which had fallen into disrepair over the years and closed due to structural issues.

With funding from Tees Valley Combined Authority, the old picture house was demolished and replaced with a new a nine million pound state of the art cinema.

The Regent has retained the previous art deco appearance, colour palette and general aesthetic, preserving the heritage of the original 1920’s building with a new façade echoing that of the original. The use of white glazed terracotta tiles allows it to take advantage of natural light from it’s beachfront location.

Internally, the three storey cinema houses three large screens, seating 200 people, a café and licensed bar with full panoramic views of the beach and coastline and events space for the public use.

The technical challenges on the scheme required the project team to introduce innovative solutions for successful delivery of the project due to its sensitive location. Despite the challenges, the scheme was completed two weeks early and has won the hearts of the local community.

The Regent won Building Project of the Year award at the 2022 Constructing Excellence North East Awards.
