Desco football team raise funds for Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen

Desco raised money for Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen by taking part in the Tees Valley Business Fives football tournament, which raised over £6,500 for charities.

Desco’s team of 7 took part in the 5-a-side tournament at the Powerleague Spawell centre in Teesside on Wednesday, 9th August, and raised £110 for their chosen charity. The Sunderland Community Soup Kitchen was established in 2019 and aims to combat hunger and poverty across the city of Sunderland, by providing warm meals and essential toiletries to those in need.

James Rome, Jake Swaddle, James Alexander, Ewan Simpson, Anthony Smith, Matthew Miller and Aidan Ward all took to the pitch in their bespoke kit to represent Desco and help raise money for charity.

The tournament kicked off at 2:15pm and the 26 teams played a total of 79 matches, with 295 goals scored. The team representing Desco played 3 games during the afternoon, winning 1 and losing 2.

Beyond Housing won the Champions League section after defeating Tilbury Douglas in the final, while Thirteen Group won the Europa League. The three teams will take part in the National Final in Manchester in October.

The day concluded with a buffet and drinks reception with a presentation from guest, Dean Windass.

John McClarey, managing director at Business Fives said: “As an event you raised £6,580 for various local and national charities, a massive well done. We look forward to welcoming you back to a future event.”

Despite the results not going in Desco’s favour, the team enjoyed the day and hope to join the tournament again.
