Desco Supports Sunderland City Council in Green Careers Initiative
Desco have been working with Sunderland City Council to create a number of videos highlighting the range of Green Careers available in the city.
This week marked Green Careers Week, running from 4th – 9th November 2024, a week dedicated to inspiring young people to explore green career pathways.
As part of Sunderland City Council’s Green Career Initiative, three staff members from Desco took part in the council’s project to showcase green careers and help inspire young people to explore green career pathways in the city.
Sunderland City Council wanted a collection of videos made featuring staff at leading green businesses in the city who attended school in Sunderland showing what the company does, how this relates to sustainability, the people who work there, the skills needed for these roles, and potential routes that pupils can follow to build a career in the future.
Aidan Ward, an electrical engineer, Jess Selkirk, a trainee mechanical engineer and Neil Crowe, a director, recorded videos for schoolchildren aged 7 to 16 (Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4), to introduce Desco and our work relating to sustainability. Each discusses their journey into the industry and the important role building services design engineers play in creating sustainable buildings for a cleaner, greener future.
The videos will also be used across social media, promoting the opportunities to work in the green economy as Sunderland works towards becoming a carbon neutral city.
Sunderland City Council are working with businesses across the city to lower the city’s carbon emissions and are encouraging young people to train for local jobs which will help achieve a carbon neutral status.
Desco not only works towards lowering their own carbon emissions but also looks at sustainable MEP options for projects they are working on. By looking at a range of options including photovoltaic panels, ground source heat pumps, EV charging points and energy efficient lighting, Desco can ensure projects are designed sustainably and with longevity in mind.
As clients seek to make new buildings and refurbishments more sustainable, Desco’s work in the green economy continues to grow, and our wealth of experience can be applied to projects in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear and beyond, fitting in with Sunderland City Council’s aim to work towards environmental sustainability and reach Carbon Neutrality.
