Desco takes part in the 2019 Children North East Sandcastle Challenge for the 25th Anniversary Event
On Friday 5th July Louise Pomery, Rachael Smith and Steven Sibley from Desco’s head office in Sunderland took part in the annual Sandcastle Challenge, alongside 1,750 local school children and 126 staff from a total of 47 businesses.
Held on Sandhaven Beach, South Shields the 25th anniversary of the event saw very excited primary and middle school children in teams compete to build the best sandcastle around the given theme, this year’s theme was ‘Build a new World’.
In advance of the event we spent time planning our designs for the challenge with our children from Broadway Junior School in Sunderland. We took our preparation to a whole new level this year and even managed to get our BIM Team involved, following the workshop with the children the guys produced drawings of the final designs for each team, the Shark and Turtle. In comparison to the BIM models we think the children made a fantastic interpretation of each of the designs.
A team of judges including BBC Look North and Tyne Tees weathermen, Paul Mooney and Ross Hutchinson and Katie Tweedie from People’s Postcode Lottery, had the tough job of choosing the five winning schools.
The day saw fantastic weather and great team spirit from all the teams takin part, well done to the winners; from Bridgewater School in Scotswood, Newcastle (The Wonderful Waste Warriors); Roseberry Primary in Chester-le-Street (Roseberry’s Plant Protectors); Ludworth Primary, Durham (The Genesis Genius); St Peter’s RC Primary, Gateshead (The Global Green Gang) and Beacon Hill Primary from Cramlington (The Beacon Hill Barnacles).
Marine Park Primary from South Shields also won a special prize for the best team name: The Clean, Green, Marine Machine.
