Desco welcomes Cameron Atkins and Sam Ord two PlanBEE placement students and plan"BEE" turns to plan "A" for new Desco recruits
Desco's continued support of the PlanBEE higher apprenticeship programme sees them welcome two new placement students and announce the successful appointments of Aidan Ward and Ewan Simpson, who have both chosen M&E as their preferred career choice following completion of the PlanBEE programme.
Cameron Atkins and Sam Ord are the latest PlanBEE students to join Desco through the award-winning education programme, which allows aspiring young professionals to earn whilst learning, through day-release studies and work placements, at a host of leading North East-based construction companies.
The PlanBEE higher apprenticeship scheme is an industry wide partnership of companies who want people with a new and broader set of skills in their businesses. The scheme provides students with a regular salary, HNC/HND qualification and a guaranteed job opportunity on graduation. The bespoke programme’s on and off-the-job training combines lessons at Gateshead College, one day each week, with a series of work placements.
Commenting on his first placement through the scheme Cameron said “This is my first placement on PlanBEE. I have had no previous experience of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or building physics so I am looking forward to gaining a rounded experience in each sector by learning from the experts at Desco. I also look forward to gaining as many skills as possible in the design systems used at Desco which I know include Revit, Bentley Hevacomp and Relux Pro. “
Sam, who has experienced four placements adds “This is my 4th placement and I started my apprenticeship with Faulkner Browns (Architecture) and then I moved onto Castle Building Services where I got some site experience, following this and to end my first year I was at Ryder Architects.
As my first year was heavily architecture based I am looking forward to be working within a MEP company, as this is what my interests were before I started my course and what I believe I will have a future in, during my time here I am looking forward to be working within the different sectors of the company which will hopefully help me decide on which specific MEP role I would like to train in once I have finished this course.”
Following completion of the two-year PlanBEE programme and having chosen M&E as their preferred choice of career path, Desco are delighted to announce that both Aidan Ward, has joined us as Trainee Electrical Engineer and Ewan Simpson, Trainee Mechanical Engineer in our Sunderland office.
Desco Director, Paul Baker, commenting on Desco’s intake said, “It’s fantastic to see Aidan and Ewan ready to progress now onto the next stage of their careers, from an employer’s perspective, it’s encouraging for us that we have had such a high interest in M&E as a chosen path. Having successfully recruited two trainees from the PlanBEE programme, gives us the confidence that our participation in PlanBEE is encouraging young people back into the engineering industry.
I would like to give an extended warm welcome to both Sam and Cameron who have just joined us for their four-month placement. We hope they’ll both enjoy the time they spend as part of the Desco team and find it beneficial in whichever construction career path they choose.”
Sam and Cameron will each spend four months at Desco’s head office at Doxford Business Park in Sunderland, which has already hosted seven other students through the programme to date.
