New City Campus opens for Leeds Trinity University
The new campus includes specialist facilities including a mock court room and labs for computer science students.
The new Leeds Trinity University City Campus at 1 Trevelyan Square has opened and will be home to students studying Business, Law, Computer Science, Criminology, and Construction and Built Environment.
Desco designed the mechanical and electrical services for the campus, which had sustainability at the forefront of the design and was designed to meet BREEAM Excellent as a minimum in design and operation. Facilities included in the design of the building include a board room, law court, custody suite and labs to enhance the students experience and allow them to become familiar with the environment and equipment they’ll use in the workplace.
The seven-storey building has been designed to meet the needs of the university and go through a change of use from an office building and bring the services up to modern efficiency standards. As well as specialist facilities for students, the refurbishment also includes a café, a chapel and multifaith prayer room with wash facilities and a library with separate spaces for silent study and group work.
Originally designed to be naturally ventilated, the building had to be redesigned to be mechanically ventilated to make it suitable for educational use, heightened by the plans to increase occupancy. Another major change for the building was disconnecting it from the main gas supply and making the building entirely powered through electricity.
The new campus will allow the university to offer more courses to more students and give them experience with real-world facilities and environments, preparing them for the workforce after graduation.
