New Woodham Academy opens to students

The new school will provide 1,200 places for students in Durham

The new Woodham Academy opened last month as students returned for a new school year.

Desco designed the mechanical and electrical services for the new school building which was funded through the Department for Education’s (DfE) School Rebuilding Programme and gives students a new, modern environment to learn in with specialist spaces. The school was built on the site of the former school, which will be demolished now the new site is complete.

Woodham Academy in Newton Aycliffe will provide 1,200 places for students and was designed and constructed to minimise carbon and has a range of sustainable features including air source heat pumps, solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations and a biodiverse green roof. The sustainable features will help to reduce the overall running costs of the school. The school was designed to align with the Net Zero targets of the DFE.

The state-of-the-art school also features a sports hall, fitness studio and four-lane swimming pool which can be used by the local community out of school hours.
