Planning approved for Woodlands Academy
Work on the site of the new SEN school will begin in the coming weeks
Planning was approved at Committee last week for the new Woodlands Academy in Scarborough.
Desco are designing the M&E services and working alongside Galliford Try for the new school which will be funded by the Department for Education (DfE) as part of its School Rebuilding Programme.
The new SEN school will cater for 136 pupils aged 2-16 who have a wide range of complex and special educational needs including social, emotional, and behavioural needs, physical and health needs, and social communication and interaction.
The new two-storey building will include classrooms for nursey, primary and secondary school pupils, a science studio, life skills room, dining room and kitchen. The school is aiming to help tackle climate change and is therefore aiming to be Net Zero Carbon in Operation and will feature solar panels, a green roof and EV charging points to help achieve this.
The design will meet minimum building fabric standards in excess of building regulations, including high levels of airtightness and insulation, controlling solar gain and utilising thermal mass to minimise heating demand and the risk of overheating in warmer months.
Natural ventilation will be used wherever possible and mixed mode ventilation will be used in all teaching spaces to maintain thermal comfort. There will also be high efficiency LED lighting coupled with occupancy and daylight controls, which will significantly reduce lighting energy use.
The scheme is set to start on site in the coming weeks and we’re looking forward to seeing it progress.
